Land of the Sun, founded on December 8, 1564 by the will of Cosimo I de' Medici, represents the last fortress of the Romagna Tuscany, with a central administrative, military, judicial and religious role.
Overlooking the main square is a building that embodies the Renaissance style. In the past, this palace housed the residence of the Grand Ducal Commissioner and the Civil and criminal court. Today, it is known as Praetorian Palace, home of the renewed Terra del Sole Museum of Man and the Environment, which extends across 25 rooms organised into two distinct itineraries.
Museum Routes
-
Historical-architectural itinerary:
It is divided into Commissioners' Hall and nine other restored rooms, where Renaissance frescoes have been recovered. This itinerary explores the birth and evolution of the fortress-city, highlighting the political and administrative functions of the Praetorian Palace, now home to the museum. -
Ethno-anthropological itinerary:
It extends over ten rooms, two halls and the cellars of the Palace, offering a glimpse into the daily life of the inhabitants of the local hills until the 1940s. Through detailed reconstructions, it is possible to immerse oneself in the atmosphere of the time, observing environments such as the farmhouse, the sharecropper family, the farmyard with its rituals, the domestic kitchen and traditional jobs. Games, pastimes and musical events of the community are also represented.
