Churches, squares, museums: but also parks and statues, not forgetting the villas, palaces and fortresses that have made the city’s history. Forlì has many places to visit and there are many tourists who annually visit Romagna and what, for hundreds of years, has been the most populous city in our land.
1) Piazza Aurelio Saffi
The square, the heart of the city, lies at the centre of the four main avenues. In the centre of the square stands the statue of Aurelio Saffi and its perimeter is surrounded by some of the city’s most prestigious buildings. At 128 metres long, the square is among the largest in Italy.
2) Abbey of San Mercuriale
The Abbey of San Mercuriale is an abbey located in Piazza Aurelio Saffi in the centre of Forlì. It is the city’s best known building and one of the symbols of the entire Emilia-Romagna region and has the dignity of a minor basilica. The cloister of San Mercuriale, next to the basilica of the same name, is the central part of the abbey. It consists of an uncovered central area surrounded by covered corridors, from which the main convent premises are accessed. It is located between Piazza Saffi and the Piazza XX Settembre behind it
3) San Domenico Museums
The facility is located in Piazza Guido da Montefeltro, 12. It has ample parking and is easily accessible. About 15 minutes from the Forlì exit of the A14 motorway or about ten from the railway station.
It often hosts internationally renowned exhibitions, attracting visitors from all over the world. The complex consists of five buildings: Palazzo Pasquali, the Church of St James the Apostle, the Dominican Convent, the Augustinian Convent and the Santa Caterina Hall. Inside you can visit the Forlì Civic Art Gallery.
4) Villa Mussolini
Villa Carpena (or Villa Mussolini) is located in San Martino in Strada on Via Crocetta and is known to have been the residence of Benito Mussolini, his wife Rachele Guidi and their five children. It is now a museum. Long owned by the Mussolini family, it was bought by a couple of entrepreneurs from Lodi in 2000.
5) ‘Franco Agosto’ Urban Park
Forlì’s ‘Franco Agosto’ Urban Park is a great friend ready to welcome you into its wide embrace. Cool and breezy on summer days, evocative and poetic in the harsh winter, it extends over a large area of twenty-six hectares that surrounds the city from the ancient city walls to the more recent outskirts. It is possible to reach the park from Piazza Saffi by boarding a fun little tourist train, or by bicycle following the cycle path that leads from the centre directly into the green heart of the city, but there is no shortage of car parking for those who need to arrive comfortably. In the large green area, enthusiasts will find five-a-side football, volleyball, basketball, beach volleyball and bocce courts for their favourite sports. For the little ones, games and bouncy castles guarantee real fun in the midst of nature.
